KiwiRail Dry Dock

KiwiRail are currently experiencing issues with capacity and service due to the ‘Aratere’ dry dock. We have informed all affected customers of what to expect; giving them advanced warning as to the likelihood that we will need to make alternative arrangements.

The inter-island capacity will be reduced by 40% for both rail freight and commercial vehicles during the period of 20th June to 14th August. The major outcomes arising from that lost capacity are;

  • Box wagon customers have had their capacity reduced by 40%
  • Capacity for customers who require ‘on the day’ bookings from the Upper North Island to South Island will be absolutely minimal
  • We are reviewing what capacity will be available for Eco 5 freight.  If we can offer any space, it will be minimal and will be limited to a Sunday service only.

This had a direct effect on one of our weekly cover bookings in place for 2 x 20’ containers on the Friday departing service for Cyclone Wire, if they are able to provide capacity they will be booked to travel on a Sunday service for Tuesday afternoon / night arrival in Christchurch. It will also effect availability for additional containers required throughout the week.

Collaborative solutions:

Cyclone containers are required weekly and can be required at short notice, which has meant Mackleys needed to come up with an alternative option to continue to provide the required service.

We partnered with our customer, Hemisphere Freight, who specialise in providing efficient coastal and import/export freight services, to provide us with an efficient, reliable and cost-effective coastal option.

The results:

By pulling resources, we were able to continue to provide Cyclone with an alternative option to ensure the same level of service is provided.
